RICH, POOR OR SPIRITUAL?

Those who consider themselves spiritually oriented must at some point find the answers to certain questions concerning the material world. One of such questions is the question about money and more precisely how it affects our spiritual growth. The most common answers fall into two categories:

  1. Being poor allows us to be more spiritual

  2. Material abundance ultimately proves the superiority of our manifesting mind-spirit over proverbial matter.

While the first approach seems rather common for spiritual seekers of the past, the second goes along with a modern version of spirituality and can be considered “New Age approach”. While the first one advocates avoiding the money, the second one uses it as a visible proof of “winning spiritual strategy”.

In my opinion, the money issue is not so much about money but about our attachment to money. Have you heard about Jesus talking about the evil related not to money but to LOVE of money? Truth is, for many people who want to get rich having lots of money would be blinding and have disastrous spiritual consequences.

So maybe we should avoid the scenario where “things we own end up owing us” and approach it with some healthy distance from the very beginning. Why not enjoying the money without getting possessed by it when rich or enjoying life without any possession when poor? In the meantime, we can relax a bit. After all, if God is at the first place, everything else falls into the right place.
